Official ECB tests
Important notice
Companies have emerged that advertise counterfeit banknote detection with imprecise or outright fraudulent claims. If a machine's description does not prove that it has passed the ECB tests (ecb.int), the seller cannot guarantee full detection of counterfeits.
Which machines can you trust to detect counterfeit banknotes?
More counterfeit banknotes are in circulation every day, and of ever-higher quality. Today's forgeries get past manual checks with ease: neither touch, nor holding the note up to the light, nor detector pens are reliable against a well-made counterfeit.
That is why the European Central Bank periodically submits the detectors on the market to its official tests: batteries of trials with real counterfeit notes withdrawn from circulation. Only machines that detect 100 % of those forgeries appear on the public list of approved devices.
