How to update the D7X banknote detector
Reviewed on 3 September 2026 · By the Detectalia technical team
Updating a D7X means downloading the file published on the updates page at detectalia.com and loading it onto the detector, either from a computer with the update cable or via a microSD card. The file is free, the process takes a few minutes and it needs no technical training. Here are the steps, the timings and what to do when it does not work first time.
What you need before you start
Updating a D7X takes three things: a computer, the update file, downloaded free from the updates page at detectalia.com, and either the Detectalia update cable or, if you prefer, a microSD card. The cable does not come in the box — which holds the detector, the power adapter and the manual — as it is an optional accessory; it plugs into the mini USB port on the unit, next to the power socket.
- The Detectalia update cable (optional accessory, USB connection to your computer).
- A computer to download the file: with a free USB port if you use the cable, or with a card reader if you go for the microSD.
- The D7X update file, downloaded from the updates page at detectalia.com.
- The detector's power adapter: run the update with the unit plugged into the mains rather than on battery power.
How to check which version your D7X is running
The installed version is shown on the detector itself: switch it on with the power button and watch the LCD display during start-up, before the currency and the standby indicator appear. Compare that reference with the one published on the updates page — if they match, your detector is already current and there is nothing to do.
One detail that saves a pointless download: the D7X is currently the only Detectalia unit with an update published; the V10, V20, V30 and V40 note counters and the D7T+ detector ship from the factory with the latest version of their software. And if you cannot read the version on screen, do not push ahead — email us with the serial number and we will confirm whether an update applies to your unit.
The update, step by step
The sequence is always the same — download, connect, load and wait for the finish message — and it is done in a single sitting at the computer:
- Download the D7X update file from the updates page at detectalia.com and unzip it into a folder on your computer.
- Connect the detector to the computer with the update cable, using the mini USB port on the unit.
- Open the update program supplied with the download.
- Load the downloaded file and confirm the start of the update.
- Wait without touching anything — above all, without unplugging the cable — until the program reports that it has finished.
- Unplug the cable and switch the D7X on: check at start-up that the version shown is the new one.
How long it takes, and what happens if it is interrupted
The load takes a few minutes and the detector is ready to work the moment it ends: no waiting period, nothing to configure afterwards, so a quiet moment at the till is all you need. And if the process is interrupted — the cable comes loose, the computer shuts down — the update is simply repeated from the beginning, with no risk: there is no way to «brick» the unit halfway through and nothing has to be sent anywhere.
Common problems
Almost every issue reported to us during an update is a connection problem rather than a fault in the unit:
- The computer does not recognise the cable: try a different USB port, plug it straight into the computer rather than into a USB hub or extension, and check that the connector is fully seated in the detector's mini USB port.
- The program cannot find the file: make sure you have unzipped the download — the compressed archive itself cannot be loaded.
- The load stops halfway: repeat the whole process from the start, leaving the cable connected throughout.
- The detector does not start up normally after the update: do not simply reload it. Contact Detectalia technical service with the serial number and what the display is showing.
- Genuine notes rejected repeatedly: the firmware is rarely the culprit here — it is dust on the sensors, the first check the manual lists — or a note fed in crooked, which returns an error with nothing at all wrong with the unit.
When the Detectalia update service makes sense
If you would rather not do it yourself, Detectalia can update the unit, check it, clean it and return it ready to work. The collection-and-return service covers mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands; from the United Kingdom, use the contact form and we will tell you which option applies to your unit.
It is the sensible route if you have several units, if you do not have the cable, or if you would rather the detector came back serviced as well: Detectalia has built and supported its own equipment since 2003.
Frequently asked questions
Is the D7X update free?
Yes — the file downloads at no cost from detectalia.com. The only possible outlay is the cable, bought once and reused for every later update.
Do I lose my settings when I update?
No. The unit keeps its settings — ADD or DEN mode, note exit direction and the counterfeit alarm sound — so you can carry on exactly as before as soon as the load finishes.
Can the D7X be updated without the update cable?
Yes: the D7X can also be updated from a microSD card. Copy the downloaded file onto the card and insert it into the detector’s slot; the manual gives the steps.
How often does the detector need updating?
Only when Detectalia publishes a new version on the updates page. This is not routine maintenance: if your unit's version matches the published one, there is nothing to update.
Does the same cable work with the D7T+?
Check with Detectalia before buying it for that model. In any case, the D7T+ needs no update today: it ships from the factory with the latest version of its software.
